The Diary of a Supply Teacher with Uniform Education
Continuing our lively introductions to the team at Uniform Education, we’re shining the spotlight on Francesca, one of our dedicated and energetic supply teachers, making a big impact across Barnet and the surrounding areas.
My alarm goes off…
As a busy mum of two, my mornings start early! I live in Elstree, so I’m well-placed to teach in schools across Barnet, Borehamwood, and Edgware. If I know where I’m going, I’ll check my journey the night before to make sure I’m organised. On mornings when I don’t have a pre-booked assignment, I’ll be up by 6:30 am to let the agency know I’m available for work. It’s all about balancing my professional and family life while staying ready for whatever the day brings.
I take care of…
My work as a supply teacher means I cover a wide range of subjects and year groups in schools around Barnet and nearby areas. I love the variety—no two days are ever the same, and I enjoy the challenge of adapting to different environments. Some schools know me well now, and it’s always lovely to walk into a classroom and be greeted by familiar faces. Whether it’s Year 1 phonics or Year 11 exam prep, I enjoy helping students of all ages succeed.
My first steps into education started…
I’ve been in teaching for over 16 years and have worked in various roles, including private tutoring. My passion for education began when I realised how rewarding it is to help children learn and grow. Since joining Uniform Education three years ago, I’ve found supply teaching to be the perfect fit for my lifestyle. The team has been fantastic—supportive, friendly, and always there when I need them.
The first thing I do when I get to work?
Each day as a supply teacher begins with setting up a positive routine. I’ll arrive early, introduce myself to staff, and get everything ready for the lesson. My go-to strategy is to set clear expectations from the start. I greet the students, explain the plan for the day, and let them know what I expect: come in quietly, sit in your seat, and get ready to learn. A structured start makes all the difference, especially in unfamiliar classrooms.
My normal day looks like…
There’s no ‘normal’ day in supply teaching, and that’s what I love about it! Sometimes I’ll have a detailed lesson plan to follow, while other times I’ll need to get creative and come up with activities on the spot. My teaching style is calm but focused, and I always make sure my lessons are engaging and well-structured. I also like to leave time at the end of the day for questions—it’s a great way to connect with the students and hear their unique perspectives.
My toughest moment…
Teaching always has its challenges, whether it’s managing a disruptive student or helping someone who’s struggling with a difficult topic. As a mum, I know how important patience and understanding are, and I try to bring that to every situation. Rolling with the punches and staying positive is key!
My proudest moment?
It’s hard to pick just one moment because there are so many little victories every day. Seeing a child’s face light up when they finally understand something, or hearing “Will you be back tomorrow?”—those are the moments that make me proud.
What’s the best part of my job?
Inspiring young minds and showing students that learning can be exciting and full of possibilities.
What’s the worst part of my job?
I’m a perfectionist, so it’s hard when I can’t follow up with a student who’s struggling. I always want to do more, but in supply teaching, you sometimes have to trust that you’ve laid the groundwork for their success.
What I would tell myself on my first day…
Stay calm, enjoy the ride, and remember that every day brings something new. Oh, and invest in coffee—you’re going to need it!
In my spare time…
When I’m not teaching, I love spending time with my family and friends. I’m always on the go, whether it’s heading to the gym, organising family activities, or catching up with friends over coffee. Socialising and staying active help me recharge and balance my busy life as a mum and teacher.
